Guwahati : A major disaster was averted by Assam Rifles after detecting a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Manipur's Thoubal district on Wednesday.
According to the reports, based on intelligence input, the troops of Thoubal battalion of 9 Sector Assam Rifles had detected a powerful IED weighing around 8 kg which was placed near a culvert on National Highway 102.
The IED was concealed in an aluminium vessel and suspected militants had planted it near a culvert near Wangjing area along Imphal-Moreh highway.
The Assam Rifles troops had carried out intensive search operation at the area with the help of Khongjom police and recovered the IED.
Later, the bomb squad team had safely defused the IED.
A top official of Assam Rifles said that, suspected militants had planted the IED targeting to the security personnel.
