Assam : Two rhino poachers killed in a fierce gun fight with security forces

Guwahati : Two rhino poachers were killed in an encounter with security forces in Assam’s Morigaon district last night.

The encounter took place at Chitalmari Char area in the central Assam’s district, where a poacher gang was hiding and planning to kill one horned rhinoceros in Orang National Park.

Based on intelligence input about presence of a poacher gang took shelter at the remote area a team of Special Task Force (STF) and Morigaon district police had launched operation at the area last night.

“When our team had reached at the area, the poachers started firing targeting us and heavy round of bullets exchanged resulting two poachers killed on spot. Other poachers had managed to flee from the area by taking advantage of darkness,” a top police official said.

Security personnel had recovered the bodies on along with one 303 rifle, several rounds of live ammunition, a silencer, a bag, two swimming tubes and other warlike stores from the encounter spot on Tuesday morning.

It is to be mentioned that, Assam police had arrested two rhino poachers in Darrang district on Monday and seized huge cache of arms and ammunition.

The arrested poachers had revealed that, they were planning to kill rhino in Orang National Park.
