Girl trafficked from Assam rescued in Siliguri brothel

Guwahati, Sep 22 : A 22-year-old girl hailing from Assam’s South Salmara police district has been rescued from a brothel in West Bengal’s Siliguri area.

South Salmara district police on Friday had rescued the girl from the brothel and arrested two traffickers.

Police said that, the traffickers had sold the girl at a brothel for Rs 28,000.

According to the reports, the family members of the girl had lodged a missing complaint at Fakirganj police station in South Salmara police district on September 8 last and stated that, the girl was missing since August 24 this year.

Following the complaint, police had registered a case (no – 196/2018) under section 363, 365 and 34 of IPC at Fakirganj police station and started investigation.

Acting on a tip-off, South Salmara police on Friday had rescued the girl from a brothel in Siliguri area.

Police had also arrested two traffickers identified as Rafikul Islam and Chand Miya.

South Salmara district Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anita Hazarika said that, the girl was sold at the brothel for Rs 28,000.

“A case was registered at Fakirganj police station that, a girl was missing and we have started investigation. Based on our reliable sources input, we have launched operation and rescued the missing girl from a red light area in Siliguri. Following that, we had arrested two persons who sold the girl at the area for Rs 28,000,” the police official said.

It is to be mentioned that, over 12,300 women have been trafficked, kidnapped in Assam in past three years.
