Midnight raids in Manipur University campus, several students injured in police attacks, 90 students, 5 faculty members arrested

Imphal, Sep 21 : Tense gripped in Manipur University after midnight raids by the security personnel in the central university campus.

According to the reports, over 200 security personnel of Manipur police and other security forces on September 20 midnight had raided the Manipur University campus and arresting over 90 students.

The security personnel had raided the boys hostel of the university inside the campus.

The students were reportedly attacked by security personnel by resorting lathi charge, using tear gas shells.

Several students were injured in the police act.

Five faculty members have also been taken custody following massive tear gas shells and mock bombs attack by the Manipur police commandos.

After 85-day of standoff at the university, normalcy had returned recently and Pro Vice-Chancellor Y Yugindro Singh, appointed by suspended vice-chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey, entered the university complex on Thursday evening.

It is to be mentioned that, due to a long-drawn agitation against Prof Adya Prasad Pandey, vice-chancellor of Manipur University, by the students and teachers in the university campus, the university was in a state of turmoil
and the Ministry of Human Resource Development had suspended by issuing an order on September 17 till the completion of the enquiry against him.

Meanwhile, student movement have been restricted across the university campus and the students are not allowed to go outside the hostel without permission of police.

There are five boys hostels in the campus and 55 students of hostel no 5 have been reportedly missing since last night.

More security personnel have been deployed in the university campus.
