Ethnic Newar Communities In Kathmandu Valley Stage Massive Protest Demanding Scrap Of Controversial Guthi Bill

Kathmandu, Nepal, June 19, 2019: Locals in Kathmandu valley, particularly the ethnic Newar communities of the Kathmandu valley, staged massive protest program on Wednesday demanding immediate scrap of controversial Guthi Bill. 

Though the government had on Tuesday decided to withdraw the Bill, the locals come up with their scheduled program of protest program suspecting that the controversial Bill would be tabled at again at the federal parliament.

Responding to the widespread protest, the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation had announced to withdraw the Bill. It is said that the Ministry had taken the decision responding to the directive of the Prime Minister KP Oli to do so.   

However, the Ministry had not confessed the flaws of the Bill but alleged the protesters of misleading. 

Hundreds of thousand locals, particularly the ethnic Newar communities gathered at the Maitighar Mandala with their traditional attire and musical instruments by chanting slogans to preserve the guthi by scrapping of the Bill.
