Kathmandu, Nepal, October 1, 2019: Speaker of House of Representatives Krishna Bahadur Mahara has resigned from his post on the moral ground on Tuesday.

Mahara tendered his resignation letter to Deputy Speaker Shivamaya Tumbahamphe.

Earlier a secretariat meeting of the ruling head Nepal Communist Party (NCP) held on Tuesday afternoon had advised Speaker Mahara to step down both from the posts of speaker and member of lower house of the parliament.

As Mahara is also the leader of the ruling head NCP, an emergency meeting was called at Prime Minister’s official Residence, Baluwatar to take the decision over the issue.

The meeting had concluded to ask Mahara to resign from the posts to pave way for launching a fair investigation into the allegation of sexual harassment.

The female employee at the Parliament Secretariat has accused Speaker Mahara of sexual harassment after reaching at her rented apartment at Tinkune, Kathmandu on Sunday evening.

Before tendering his resignation, Mahara had met Prime Minister and NCP Co-Chair KP Sharma Oli and another NCP Co-chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal separately.

It is said that Prime Minister Oli had suggested him to resign immediately from both the posts as Speaker and member of the parliament.
