Guwahati : To divert the row over naming the Model colleges in the state after RSS ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya, the BJP-led Assam government has decided to launch a new computer literacy programme in the name of a prominent Assamese literary figure instead of present Rajiv Gandhi computer literacy programme continued in the state since 2004. 
 
Assam Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said in his tweet that, the new computer literacy programme will be known as Banikanta Kakati computer literacy programme. 
 
Banikanta Kakati was a prominent literary figure, critic and scholar in Assamese literature with his immense contribution to the Assamese language, literature. 
 
The decision has taken up by the state government to divert the naming row of Model college, while several organisations of the state opposed the government move to open colleges in the state in the name of Deendayal Upadhyaya. 
 
Main opposition party of Assam Congress, BJP's ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), CPI-M, AIUDF, farmer's organisation Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and several other organisations had slammed the automatic decision of the BJP-led state government for naming the Model colleges in the state after RSS ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya. 
 
The Assam minister tweeted that, the new computer literacy programme will be implemented with an annual outlay of Rs 43 crore. 
 
Himanta Biswa Sarma further said that, the finance department has already cleared the file relating to the computer literacy programme and the computer teacherswill get their salaries directly from the government. 
 
It is to be mentioned that, a total of 3532 computer teachers contractual job for a period of five years under the Rajiv Gandhi computer literacy programme ended June 30 last. 
 
The Assam minister said that, almost all computer teachers will be absorbed under the new programme.
