Kathmandu, Nepal, September 1, 2020: Following the intense pressure from the people’s level, the Managing Director (MD) of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Kulman Ghising is likely to get his four-year term extended.
Though the formal decision to extend his term is yet to0 made, strong backing from Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the executive chairman of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), would compel the government to extend his term for another four year, claims a source close to the party.
As Ghising is largely credited for ending Nepal’s ruinous daily load shedding and several reforms in the NEA, people from different walks of life have been demanding for another one term extension as MD of the NEA. Social media users have been threatening even to resort strike if his term was not extended to appoint others in the post.
Responding to the pressure from people’s level, Dahal has also made position in favor of Ghising and categorically instructed Energy Minister Barsha Man Pun to extend his tenure for another one term, a source close to the NCP said. Ghising was due to step down on 14 September.
The source also said preferring anonymity that the prime minister KP Sharma Oli has also become positive to extend Ghising’s term, thanks to the pressure from both people’s level and the party as well.
As Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada, who is consider as the close confident of Prime Minister Oli, had made a statement on last week that Ghising was appointed by social media but not by the government, there was a speculation that the government would not extend Ghising’s term to pave the way to appoint others in the post.
