KATHMANDU, NEPAL: The Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Korea Association of Travel Agents (KATA) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate tourism cooperation and increase traveler exchange between the two nations. The agreement was formalized on Monday by TAAN President Sagar Pandey and KATA Vice President Kim Beom-jae, in a ceremony attended by the South Korean Ambassador to Nepal, Park Tae-young.
Under this new framework, KATA will spearhead promotional campaigns in South Korea to position Nepal as a premier destination for Korean adventurers. Beyond marketing, the South Korean association will provide TAAN with essential technical and informational support to modernize Nepal's trekking infrastructure and services. In a reciprocal move, TAAN has committed to promoting South Korea among Nepali travelers, thereby fostering a balanced, two-way tourism flow that benefits both economies.
To ensure the partnership’s success, President Sagar Pandey emphasized the necessity of improved logistics, specifically calling for an increase in direct flights between Kathmandu and Seoul. He further addressed the safety of international visitors by assuring the Korean delegation that the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) will be strictly utilized to provide real-time tracking and security for Korean trekkers in Nepal's mountain regions.
Ambassador Park Tae-young noted that this MoU transcends simple tourism, serving as a vital tool to deepen the 50-year diplomatic friendship between the two countries. He highlighted that alongside the Employment Permit System (EPS), tourism remains a cornerstone of the Nepal-Korea relationship. Ultimately, the agreement is expected to lead to a significant surge in arrivals from South Korea, which remains one of Nepal's most important source markets for high-value trekking and cultural tourism.
