Guwahati, November 17 : The draft publication of the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam would likely to be deferred till July, 2018 after Register General of India (RGI) on Thursday had submitted an interlocutory petition before the Supreme Court that the entire preparation and publication of the draft NRC will be completed on or before July 31, 2018.
 
The apex court will hear the case on November 22 next.
 
Earlier, the Assam government announced that, the draft NRC would be released by December 31, 2017.
 
RGI Shailesh had submitted the petition for seeking the rescheduling of timeline after NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela had recently sent a letter to the Union Home Ministry and the RGI that, it would not possible to release the draft NRC by December 31 next, while over 1.21 crore documents are still to be verified.
 
The RGI has also appealed the apex court for some modifications in the NRC.
 
Recently, the NRC coordinator had submitted the status report before the Supreme Court and stated that out of 3.21 crore applications, around 2 crore have been verified so far.
 
Apart from the NRC coordinator status report, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) also submitted a report to the Union Home Ministry that law and order situation may be created in Assam in the wake of the draft NRC publication.
 
Meanwhile, All Assam Students Union (AASU) accused the both BJP-led centre and state government that the government has derailed the entire process only because of Hindu Bangladeshi people.
 
"BJP want to provide citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshi people and the citizenship bill, 2016 would likely to be brought in the next parliament session. So they delayed the entire process for their own business," general secretary of the student body Lurinjyoti Gogoi said.
 
The top AASU leader said that, Assam had already taken huge foreigners burden and now the state will not take more.
 
On the other hand, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) said that, the both centre and state government have made conspiracy against the indigenous people of Assam by delaying the NRC process.
