Kathmandu, Nepal: the government and the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) have on Saturday inked on the three point agreement ending to the ongoing strike launched against of the scheduled local level elections slated for coming May 14.
As per the agreement, the local level elections will be held in two phase. The first phase of election will be held within the slated time and the second phase of elections will be held within a month after the first phase of elections.
It is said that the date for the second phase of elections will be fixed with consultation with the Election Commission (EC), the constitutional body responsible to hold the elections. Though the government deserves the right to fix the date to the elections, the EC will be consulted to fix the date for the second phase of elections.
Similarly, the government and the agitating UDMF have agreed to revise the constitution amendment bill registered in the parliament. The meeting has formed a committee comprising the leaders from both sides- government allies and the agitating UDMF -to draft the proposal to revise the draft bill.
With the agreement, the UDMF has withdrawn its protest program declared against of the government and the scheduled elections. The UDMF had announced even the indefinite strikes targeting to the scheduled elections.
