Guwahati: Ranikor, Martin M Danggo, former Meghalaya Congress MLA, who resigned from the Congress party on June 21 last had joined the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) today.
During a function held at the party office of NPP in Shillong, Martin M Danggo, the former Congress MLA from Ranikor constituency had joined the NPP in presence of top leaders of the Meghalaya’s ruling party.
Danggo would likely to be the NPP candidate in the upcoming bypoll to Ranikor assembly seat.
Dr Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi, state president of NPP had welcomed Danggo into his party.
Danggo said that, he resigned as Congress MLA on June 21 after the Conrad Sangma-led Meghalaya government decided to make Ranikor a full-fledged Civil Sub Division.
It is to be mentioned that, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tysong had inaugurated the newly created Ranikor Civil Sub Division was inaugurated on July 10.
“After resignation, people have speculated that, I will be joined NPP soon. I have joined the party after fulfilled our demands and aspirations. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has promised to the Ranikor Sub Division demand committee and it has been achieved,” Martin M Danggo said.
Donggo further said – “I don’t mind, who fights against me”.
“I have trusted my voters and supporters of Ranikor, who elected me to the Meghalaya legislative assembly since 1998,” Danggo said.
Danggo has been elected to the Meghalaya assembly for consecutive five terms since 1998 from Ranikor assembly seat (previously known as Langrin).
In last assembly poll held in this year, Danggo defeated his closest rival, UDP candidate Pius Marwein by a margin of 2002 votes.
In the Ampati by-poll, the opposition Congress had retained the seat and emerged as the single largest party in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly with 21 seats.
But after Danggo’s resignation, Congress’s power in the Meghalaya assembly came down to 20.
On the other hand, Agatha Sangma had resigned as a NPP MLA from South Tura seat to pave way for her brother and Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma to be elected as the MLA.
