Kathmandu, Nepal, October 13, 2020: The Nepal government has decided to close border points with India until November 15. A cabinet meeting held on Monday made the decision to close Nepal’s international border with India in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Though the rampant cross border movement of the people was a major reason behind the spread of coronavirus as Nepal and India are witnessing a rising number of COVID-19 cases in recent days, the decision would affect to those who intend to travel to earn by reaching their respective destination to solve their hand-to-mouth problem and to reunite with their families to celebrate the upcoming festivals.

Hundreds of thousands of workers are working in Nepali and Indian cities and used to migrate every year in festive season. The government had decided in the second week of August to allow cross-border movement of people. However, the government has not decided to halt the cross-border movement of cargo vehicles from the designated entry points.

The international flights between Nepal and India suspended earlier to contain the spread of COVID-19 are also yet to resume. Nepal’s international border with China is also already closed except cargo transports.
