Kathmandu, Nepal, July 7, 2020: Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi’s frequent meetings meeting with the ruling head Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and other number of government officials including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and President Bidya Devi Bhandari have raised eyebrow of all, particularly in the political and diplomatic levels.
As Chinese Ambassador Hou has intensified meetings with senior government officials and NCP leaders following the widening differences in the party without specifying the specific reason of having meetings, some have taken her activism as of the mediating role to patch of the growing differences of the party.
Chinese Ambassador Hou had met with President Bidya Bhandari and senior Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader Madhav Kumar Nepal lately at the time when almost all the standing committee members and senior leaders of the party have exerted pressure to the Prime Minister Oli to step down from both the posts.
As China seems largely concerned over the row within the ruling head NCP and the latest political developments in Nepal contradicting to the past, the frequent meetings with a number of government officials and political party leaders have become a matter of concerns at the political and diplomatic levels.
Referring to the diplomatic code of conduct, which has made a clear provision that any official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) should be present at such meetings, some have raised questions over the role of ambassadors in Nepal though meeting of ambassadors from different countries looks like common phenomenon to the Nepalese leaders and officials.
