Dahal Reelected as Chairman of the Maoist Center Sans Elections

Kathmandu, Nepal, January 4, 2022: Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, who has been leading the party since more than three decades, has been reelected as the chairman of the CPN Maoist Center for the next five years term. Dahal was unanimously reelected as the chairman of the party from the meeting of the newly elected Central committee members on Monday.

The 236 member central committee was picked on Sunday from the 8th general convention of the party that concluded on Monday. Narayan Kaji Shrestha’s proposal to elect Dahal as the chairman of the party was unanimously endorsed from the meeting of the newly elected central committee memebrs. 

It is said that the central committee of the party is entrusted to elect remaining 14 members of the office bearers that include a senior vice chairman, six vice chairmen, a general secretary, two deputy general secretaries, three secretaries and a treasurer are yet to be elected. 

The central committee meeting of Monday failed to pick the office bearers, thanks to the differences, particularly in the post of party’s General Secretary.  It is said that Janardan Sharma and Brash Man Pun have been competing themselves to be appointed as the general secretary of the party.

Of the total 299 member central committee of the party, only 236 members were picked from the general convention sans elections. It is said that remaining 63 central committee members will be picked soon.  It is said that Chairman Dahal is entrusted to elect remaining 63 central committee members through the consensus from the central committee meeting. 

As the general convention is concluded sans selecting the office bearer posts, the Central Committee now has the responsibility to elect 14 office bearers. Chairman Dahal is entrusted even to pick office bearer posts from the central committee members.     

The party had amended its statue to have 15 member office bearer posts that include one chair, one senior vice-chair, six vice-chairs, one general secretary, two deputy secretaries, three secretaries and one treasurer.
