Kathmandu, Nepal, March 23, 2021: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) does not seem interested to form a coalition government incorporating the CPN (Maoist Center) and the Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSPN).

As the meeting of the office bearers and ex-office bearers held on Monday concluded without making a substantive decision regarding the formation of a new government, it is likely that the NC would not take decision to participate in the government until and unless situations favor it to lead a coalition government.

Most of the NC leaders including senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel have been insisting the party president Bahadur Deuba to take initiation form a coalition government under his own leadership to replace the CPN UML chairman KP Oli led government.

During the meeting, moist of the participants raised voices on finding an alternative to the incumbent Oli-led government. However, no concrete decision was made regarding the formation of new government after president Deuba urged to concentrate the meeting on party’s internal issues including the necessary preparations of the upcoming general convention.

Since the CPN (Maoist Center) has yet to withdraw support to the incumbent government and the ruling CPN UML is also holding discussion with Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSPN), time has not ripened yet to take decision regarding the participation in the government, president Deuba said at the meeting.

The critics have alleged the NC president Deuba of showing apathy to form a new coalition government to provide ample comfort to Oli. Since the Maoist Center has repeatedly been urging to lead to be formed coalition government, the party should take concrete decision regarding the formation of new government, the critics have said.

Following the Supreme Court (SC) order to reinstate the dissolved parliament and to nullify the unification between the CPN UML and the CPN (Maoist Center) as the erstwhile NCP, calls have been growing within the NC and outside of the party to form a coalition government under the leadership of the NC.

CPN (Maoist Center) chair Pushpa Kamal Daha had held several meetings with Deuba requesting him to form a coalition government between the NC, Maoist Center and the JSPN. However, Deuba had suggested Dahal to come up with the proposal to form a coalition government only after withdrawing support to the incumbent government.

Though a general understanding is made among the NC, Maoist Center and the JSPN to form a new coalition government to replace Oli led government, the Maoist Center has yet to take decision to withdraw support to the government.
