Kathmandu, Nepal, November 17, 2020: With the decision to extend the deadline for distributing active memberships to mid-December, it is likely that 14th General Convention of the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) likely to differed by September next year.
The Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting has already decided to extend the deadline for distributing active memberships to mid-December. Though the CWC has yet to decided the date for the general convention, it is almost certain that the date for the 14th general convention will be automatically deferred by September; a NC leader said preferring anonymity.
The rival factions of the NC have been differing over the date of the 14th general convention. Party president Sher Bahadur Deuba led faction have been insisting to differ the general convention date by coming September owing to the coronavirus pandemic while senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel led faction has been pressing to hold on the convention at scheduled dates- February 19 to 22. Likewise, another faction led by Krishna Prasad Situala, has proposed June for the general convention.
As the dissident faction had not opposed the decision to extend the deadline for distributing active memberships to mid-December, the Deuba led faction has a belief that there will be consensus even to fix the new general convention date.
Poudel led faction, however, still believes that there would not necessary to differ the general convention date by September even if the deadline for distributing active memberships was extended to mid-December.
