Kathmandu, Nepal August 11, 2020: The Nepali Congress (NC), the grand old democratic party and the main opposition in the parliament, is going to postpone its scheduled 14th general convention, which was slated earlier for February next year.
Though the NC has yet to take the formal decision over the issue, the office bearers have said that there is no alternative of postponement of the scheduled general convention due to the adverse effects of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to hold the elections in the lower units.
The Nepali Congress has to hold the general convention within March to elect the new leadership of the party including the Central Working Committee (CWC). As the regular tenure of the existing leadership had already expired, it was extended until March with the mandate to hold the general convention within the schedule timeframe.
As per the party statue, the general convention can be postponed by another six months if the party fails to elect new committees in all local structures. It is said that the NC leadership has been mulling the idea to postpone the general convention of the party until May. However, the dissident factions within the party have a demand that the general convention of the part has to be held as soon as possible.
The Nepali Congress has already begun process to distribute the active membership of the party. However, it has faced difficulties to fix the date for the elections in the local units due to the spreading fear of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Likewise, the party is yet to form interim structures to comply with the new arrangements though it had already embraced the federal setup in the party mechanism.
