Butwal, Nepal, October 2, 2020: Contradicting to the previous decision and demands of the region, the Province 5 government has decided to pick Dang as its provincial capital.

Butwal of Rupandehi district is currently the temporary capital of the province.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers of the province 5 held on Friday approved Deukhuri of Dang district as the permanent capital of the province.
Following the decision, the proposal has been tabled at the Provincial Assembly for endorsement.

Likewise, the meeting has also decided to pick Lumbini as the name of the province.

Though the decision to name the province as Lumbini would not bag controversies, the decision to relocate the capital would not be passed easily, thanks to the division among the provincial members representing to the different parties.

As per the constitutional provision, any proposal to determine the permanent capital city and name of the province needs to be endorsed through a two-thirds majority of the provincial assembly.

Though the ruling head Nepal Communist Party (NCP) bags comfortable majority in the provincial assembly, it is likely that some provincial assembly members from the ruling NCP would not stand in favor of the decision.
