Kathmandu, Nepal, June 24, 2020: The internal rift intensified within the ruling head Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has taken a nasty turn after Speaker Agni Sapkota ‘unilaterally’ put off the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) till July 1.
As the decision to put off the HoR meeting jeopardized the fate of the multimillions financial assistance under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project, the party leadership, particularly the faction led by Prime Minister KP Shama Oli has alleged the dissident faction of the party led by party president Pushpa Kamal Dahal, particularly the Speaker Sapkota, for ‘unilaterally’ putting off the HoR meeting just to escape the MCC endorsement deadline.
However, some sections of the society have casted a doubt that the meeting of the HoR would have put off in the consent of the party leadership including the Prime Minister Oli to avert the strike in the street and possible split of the party.
As the deadline to endorse the MCC was already set for the June 30, 2020, there is less likely to be endorsed the MCC from the parliament.
The ruling head had been sharply dividing over the issue of accepting to the assistance under the MCC. The Prime Minister Oli led faction is in favor of endorsing the agreement through the parliament while another faction led by Dahal and other leaders were against of endorsing the MCC.
Likewise, the main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) has also stood in favor of the MCC agreement.
