Supreme Court Directs Government not to Implement the recently introduced Citizenship Amendment Ordinance

Kathmandu, Nepal, June 10, 2021: The Supreme Court (SC), the Apex Court of the country, has on Thursday ordered the government not to implement the recently introduced Citizenship Amendment Ordinance. 

Responding to the writ petitions filed against of the ordinance, the constitutional bench of the SC, formed comprising Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, Justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Hari Krishna Karki, Mira Khadka and Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, issued the order to this effect. As many as six writ petitions were filed at the SC challenging the ordinance demanding interim order.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari had issued the Nepali Citizenship (first amendment) Ordinance on May 23 at the recommendation of the government.
The ordinance issued by the government had been dragging into controversy because of its some controversial provisions regarding the issuance of citizenship certificates on the basis of born.
