Winter session of the parliament ended amid political uncertainty

Kathmandu, Nepal, April 19, 2021:  Following the government’s recommendation, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has on Monday ended the winter session of the House of Representatives (HoR). Issuing a press statement, the office of the president, Sital Niwas has informed about the end of the winter session of the (HoR). 

Earlier, the government had decided to prorogue the ongoing winter session of the federal parliament effective from 1:00 pm on Monday. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had called a ‘emergency’ meeting at his official Residence in Baluwatar to take the decision to prorogue the winter session of the parliament. 

The winter session of the parliament is prorogued at the time when political parties, particularly the ruling ally CPN Maoist Center and the dissident faction of the ruling UML led by Madhav Kumar Nepal had been trying to register no-confidence motion against of the government to form a coalition government by taking into confidence the main opposition Nepali Congress. 

Though the constitutional provision has allowed the government to recommend the president to prorogue and call the meeting of the federal parliament, the recent one decision to prorogue the winter session of the parliament is taken meaningfully from different sectors. Next meeting of the federal parliament was called for Tuesday.
