Kathmandu, Nepal, December 8, 2020: The government of Nepal and China are going to announce the newly-measured height of Mount Everest today. After working for years in measuring the height of the world’s tallest mountain, both the countries are jointly announcing the newly-measured height amid a function on Tuesday. It is said that the foreign ministers of the two countries will jointly announce the height via a virtual meeting.
Currently, the height of Mount Everest is globally accepted as 8,848 meters. But, it is suspected that the height of the Mount Everest might have changed due to the devastating Gorkha earthquakes occurred in 2015. The geologists have a belief that tectonic plates would have shifted due to the earthquake making change the height of the Mount Everest.
The current height of the Mount Everest was measured by the Survey of India in 1955. The measurement was confirmed by a survey from the Chinese side and accepted globally including in Nepal.
As questions were aroused over the height of the Mount Everest after the earthquake, the government of Nepal had decided to measure the height of the Mount Everest in 2017. A GPS machine was installed at the top of the Mount Everest to measure the height. It is said that Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) was sued to measure the height of the Mount Everest.
