Kathmandu, Nepal, November 10, 2020: Government’s decision to remove the phrase Federal Democratic Republic used ahead of Nepal for correspondence and speeches has been dragged into controversies. The decision has been criticized even suspecting that the government would have made the decision with the aim to derail the country from the federal democratic republican system as enshrined in the 2015 constitution.
A cabinet meeting held on September 27 had decided to remove the phrase ‘Federal Democratic Republic’ and use only the word ‘Nepal’ while officially using the name of the country. Following the cabinet decision, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration had on October 20 circulated notice to all local governments to implement the decision.
Responding the widespread concerns, the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee (SAGGC) of the Parliament has directed the government not to implement the decision. Likewise, the committee has also summoned the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to discuss over the government’s decision.
The committee decided to summon Prime Minister Oli with the conclusion that the clarification presented by Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali was not satisfactory. Gyawali was present at the meeting on behalf of the Oli on Monday and defended the cabinet decision stating that the decision was taken to bring unity on the country’s name and to ease communication.
