Aizawl : Protests have been continued by the students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Mizoram at the campus of the higher educational institution over the death of a student, allegedly due to unhygienic food and water provided in the hostel.

Devsharan Kumar, a student of 1st year of B.Tech in the NIT Mizoram was died on March 31 at Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

Devsharan Kumar, hailing from a poor dalit family of Khagaria district in Bihar, had fallen ill allegedly due to unhygienic, bad quality of food and water provided in the institution’s hostel.

Students of the institution alleged that, Devsharan Kumar initially complained of a throat infection and his condition was going worst, but the administration of the institute hadn’t taken any initiative.

Kumar was allowed to go on leave, but immediately admitted at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on his way to home on March 30 last.

The GMCM doctors had immediately admitted him to the ICU unit and he was said to have had a heart infection.

Students of the institution alleged that, there are worst condition of food and water supply facility in the hostel and they informed the institution’s authorities about it six months ago, but the authorities hadn’t taken any measures to change the situation.

The students also alleged that, Devsharan Kumar passed away due to maladministration of institution authorities and reason behind are poor water (throat infection to heart infection), no medical facilities and lack of basic amenities.

They also alleged that, about 15 days before the death, Devsharan appealed the warden of the institution hostel for leave as he was not able to appear in his mid-semester examination because of feeling extremely unwell, but the warden ignored it.

The students also alleged that, they were not permitted to meet Mizoram Governor to submit their demands.

Meanwhile, student protests are being continued in the NIT Mizoram campus at Chaltlang area and they demanded justice of Devsharan Kumar death, to provide proper food and adequate amenities.

Meanwhile, Mizo students organisation Mizo Zirlai Pawl had lodged an FIR to Zonuam police outpost demanding a probe into the student death.
