Kathmandu, Nepal, October 17, 2023: The government has started the process of formally granting citizenship to the non-resident Nepalese. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has started the process of granting citizenship to non-resident Nepalese amid a program held at his official residence on Tuesday morning.
Prime Minister Dahal started the distribution of non-resident citizenship by awarding citizenship to Kul Acharya and Badri KC, presidents of NRNA International Coordinating Council.
The amendment to the Citizenship Act has paved the way for granting citizenship to non-resident Nepalese.
According to subsection 1 of Section 7 A of the Citizenship Act, a person who acquired the citizenship of a foreign country and resided in a country other than the member countries of the South Asian Regional Cooperation Organization and who obtained the citizenship of a foreign country after his or her father or mother, father or mother, was a citizen of Nepal by descent or birth. There is a provision for non-residents to obtain Nepali citizenship so that they can enjoy economic, social and cultural rights.
Those who have obtained the citizenship of NRN will not be allowed to participate in politics, hold government positions and vote like other genuine Nepali citizens. But they will be able to do business and keep property in Nepal.
In order to obtain citizenship, non-resident Nepalese have to submit proof of citizenship of Nepal in the past, proof of relinquishment, proof of citizenship of a foreign country by the applicant himself or through his parents, grandparents.
A person, who has obtained such citizenship, will not be allowed to act against the independence, sovereignty, geographical integrity and national interest of Nepal. If it is found that the citizenship can be revoked, the provision has made the provision.
