Guwahati : While protests are going on against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 across the state, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said that, the present state government is committed to safeguard Jati, Mati and Bheti of the indigenous people of the state and the government will never take a back step in protecting their interests.
 
Inaugurating the first ever North East Military School, Bijni at a function held at Bijni Bidyapeeth LP School playground at Bijni, Sonowal said that the present State government has come to power with the mandate of the people of Assam and his government will do everything to promote and protect the interests of the people of the state.
 
He also said that since the government sincerely believes in the exclusive rights of the people of Assam over land, his government immediately after coming to power launched an uncompromising tirade to evict encroachments from Satra lands.
 
Allaying fear that has been hovering around the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, Sonowal said that his government is duty bound to lend dignity to all people living across 33 districts of the state.
 
He also said his government never played hide and seek with the core agenda concerning the interests of the people of Assam and therefore, ensured fortification and completion of fencing of Indo-Bangla border to defeat any evil design of intrusion across the border.
 
The Assam CM said that the present Central and State governments are taking hordes of schemes to expedite development and welfare of the people of the state.
 
Citing an example of people centric development, Sonowal said that government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated three bridges over the Brahmaputra in the last 4.5 years as against the previous governments who had built equal number of bridges in Assam in the last 60 years.
 
He also said his government in the state is also on its toes for developing academic environment of the state and therefore laid foundation stone for record number of medical colleges.
 
Sonowal also said that North East Military School, Bijni will go a long way in rekindling patriotic fervour of the young students who in turn will be able to render their services for the nation.
 
Sonowal also hailed BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary for turning the once disturbed areas into an epicentre of peace, development and harmonious coexistence. He also reiterated his commitment to work for safeguarding the constitutional rights of the people of Assam and appealed AASU and other intelligentsia to extend their cooperation to enable the government to ensure protection of the rights of indigenous people of Assam as per the tenets of Assam Accord.
 
BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary while speaking on the occasion lauded the management for choosing an area within BTAD for setting up the school. He also said under the present government all ethnic communities are living peacefully in the state and granting of ST status will not create any discord among the tribes of the state. He also maintained that ST status to six communities will be given without disturbing the rights and privileges of the existing people belonging to ST category.
 
Minister for development of WPT&BC Chandan Brahma also spoke on the occasion.
 
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal coinciding the occasion also laid foundation stone of permanent campus of the North East Military School to be set up at Hawargaon-Charagaon in Chirang district. It may be noted that North East Military School, Bijni an English medium fully residential school is third of its kind in the country after Nagpur and Nasik. The school is affiliated to Bhonsala Military School, Nagpur and will be developed on PPP mode.
 
MLAs Kamalsing Narzary, Thaneswar Basumatary, Moneswar Brahma, Prasanta Phukan, functionaries of the school and a host of other dignitaries were also present in the inaugural ceremony.
