Kathmandu, Nepal: Author Ashok Silwal has published his new book, Ocean: The Sound of the Himalayas, at a time when Nepal is recovering from devastating floods and other natural disasters.
The book explores the connection between nature and humanity, drawing a link between the Himalayas and the ocean. Silwal presents nature not as separate parts of the world, but as a shared system in which people and the environment are closely connected.
“Close your eyes and listen to the sound of the Himalayan wind or the waves of the ocean. You hear the same voice,” Silwal said. “The Himalayas and the ocean are not two separate worlds. One Earth, one family and one experience are the core messages of the book.”
Silwal said the message is particularly relevant at a time when communities are facing the consequences of natural disasters and environmental changes.
He is also the founder of Himalaya to Ocean (H2O) Nepal Book Journey, a literary initiative aimed at taking his books across all 77 districts of Nepal and eventually to readers around the world.
The journey brings together three of Silwal’s works. Everest: An Unfinished Story uses Mount Everest as a global symbol while focusing on the people and realities connected to the mountain. Appa Deepo Bhava tells a story of personal transformation and encourages readers to look within themselves for their own source of strength and light. His latest book, Ocean: The Sound of the Himalayas, expands that idea to the relationship between nature, people and the planet.
Silwal, who also serves as the Langtang Goodwill Ambassador, is preparing to bring another book, Langtang: From Death to Life, to readers. The book focuses on the experience of people rebuilding their lives after disaster and loss.
Taken together, Silwal’s books and the H2O Nepal Book Journey reflect a recurring theme in his work: the connection between people and nature, and the possibility of moving from tragedy toward hope and renewal.
