Guwahati, Sep 24 : The process of filing of claims and objections for 40 lakh people, who were left out in the complete draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), will be started from September 25.
The Supreme Court (SC) on September 19 directed the NRC authorities to begin the process of claims and objections for the left out people in the complete draft of NRC from September 25 and remain open for the next 60 days.
The complete draft of NRC was published on July 30 by including names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants in Assam.
Over 40 lakh people were left out from the complete draft and they will now get another opportunity to prove their citizenship.
The NRC updating process is going on in Assam to find out illegal foreigners residing in the Assam.
Around 2500 NRC Seva Kendras in the state are now ready to receive claims and objections from the people who left out in the complete draft and over 20,000 NRC employees have been engaged for the process.
On the other hand, the apex court has also decided to leave five documents among the 15 listed documents for the claims and objections process.
Earlier, State NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela had proposed the apex court to drop five documents for preparing the modalities of the Standard Operating Procedure for dealing with claims and objections.
The five documents are - the 1951 NRC, pre-1971 voters’ lists, citizenship certificate, refugee registration certificate and ration cards.
The claims can be filed based on ten documents and these are - Land documents like Registered Sale Deed, Records of land rights up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Permanent Residential Certificate issued from outside the State up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Passport issued by the Government of India up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Life Insurance Corporation of India Insurance Policy (LICI) of relevant period up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Any licence/certificate issued by any government authority of relevant period i.e. up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Document showing service/employment under Government/Public Sector undertaking up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Bank/Post Office Accounts of relevant period i.e. up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Birth certificates issued by the competent authority up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Educational certificate issued by Board/Universities up to March 24, 1971 (midnight), Records/processes pertaining to court up to March 24, 1971 (midnight) provided they are parts of a processing in a judicial or revenue court.
Various political parties, organisations in the state are not satisfied following the SC directive by dropping five among the listed 15 documents.
It is to be mentioned that, the SC will hear the issue on October 23 next and till October 23 the claims can be filed based on the 10 documents.
