Guwahati: The miserable condition of road connectivity and healthcare facilities in Assam’s river island district Majuli was once again exposed when a teacher died due to lack of poor road connectivity and medical treatment.
According to the reports, a teacher of a junior college hailing from Patharichuk area along Lakhimpur-Majuli district border was fell sick on Friday and family members of the teacher have been forced to carry him in a hand-cart to a government run hospital in Majuli district, the assembly constituency represented by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Due to dilapidated conditions of roads, family members of the teacher named Sushil Payeng carried him in a hand-cart to reach the Pitambar Deva Goswami civil hospital at Gormur, which is Majuli's only healthcare hope by crossing two rivers and several kilometres of roads.
Due to worst condition of roads, no ambulance could make it to the area, where the teacher is from.
After crossing two rivers and several kilometres of roads, the family members of the teacher admitted him at the government run hospital, but he died from a lack of medical treatment and unavailability of doctors.
A relative of the teacher said that, the teacher lost his life due to worst road connectivity and absence of doctors.
“Road connectivity in our area is very worst. We carried the patients to hospital by using hand-cart and doctors also not available to see the patients,” relative of the teacher said.
The villagers are facing lots of problem in the bordering areas of Lakhimpur and Majuli district since independence.
Recently, a pregnant woman was carried by the family members in a hand-cart to a government run hospital in the world’s biggest river island district.
Earlier in April, 2017, a man had forced to carry the body of his brother on bicycle due to absence of ambulance.
