Kathmandu, Nepal: Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle is scheduled to visit India for two days on October 17 and 18, according to sources at the Ministry of Finance.
Wagle will meet Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal during the visit, the sources said.
The meetings will cover Nepal-India economic ties, trade and investment. Discussions will also focus on ways to bring more Indian investment to Nepal and on issues that may be holding back potential investors.
There is no meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wagle’s schedule, according to the ministry sources.
Meeting Indian business leaders
Wagle will also attend an event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) during his stay in India.
According to the sources, he will use the event to talk with Indian business leaders about investment opportunities in Nepal. The government is particularly interested in attracting investment in hotels, hospitality and wellness-related businesses.
Nepal has been looking to attract more private investment in tourism and related industries, and the CII event will give Wagle a chance to discuss those opportunities directly with Indian companies.
Address at Delhi School of Economics
Wagle is also scheduled to speak at the Delhi School of Economics. His address will cover Nepal’s economy, economic policy and the country’s economic relationship with India.
The visit comes as the government looks to expand investment and business links with India. India remains one of Nepal’s largest trading partners, with the two countries maintaining close economic ties in areas ranging from trade and tourism to energy and investment.
For Wagle, the trip will bring together talks with Indian government officials and business representatives. The main focus will be on trade, investment and ways to make it easier for Indian companies to invest in Nepal.
No investment agreement or other specific deal has been announced for the visit so far. Any agreements or decisions reached during the trip will be known through official statements from the two governments.
