Kathmandu, Nepal: Hundreds of runners gathered in Lalitpur on Tuesday morning to pay tribute to Nepali Congress founder and Nepal's first democratically elected Prime Minister, Bishweshwar Prasad (BP) Koirala, by participating in the Green Run organized to mark his death anniversary. Combining remembrance with the spirit of fitness and community participation, the event attracted around 1,400 registered participants.
Mukesh Bahadur Pal won the men's category after completing the five-kilometre course in 16 minutes and 15.7 seconds. His impressive performance earned him first place in the competition, which started from UN Park in Lalitpur.
Following the race, Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa presented cash prizes to the top six finishers. Congratulating the winners, Thapa emphasized the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles while preserving the democratic ideals and vision championed by BP Koirala.
Pal received Rs. 50,000 for securing first place. Narendra Singh Rawal finished second and received Rs. 25,000, while Sanjay Shrestha, who came third, was awarded Rs. 20,000.
Meanwhile, Ganesh Singh, who finished fourth, received Rs. 12,000. Amrit Thakuri, the fifth-place finisher, was awarded Rs. 10,000, while Nageshwar Ahir, who placed sixth, received Rs. 8,000.
According to the Nepali Congress Central Office, approximately 1,400 people registered for the Green Run, making it one of the party's largest commemorative sporting events. The race brought together party leaders, supporters, athletes, fitness enthusiasts and members of the public, reflecting broad participation in honouring BP Koirala's legacy.
The Green Run has become an important part of the Nepali Congress's annual observance of BP Koirala's death anniversary. Beyond commemorating one of Nepal's foremost democratic leaders, the event promotes physical fitness, environmental awareness and community engagement while celebrating the values of democracy, unity and public service that BP Koirala championed throughout his life.
