Kathmandu, Nepal, August 9, 2022: The Investment Board of Nepal (IBoN) has given the nod to India’s state-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited to study and develop the 1,200 MW hydropower projects, named as West Seti Projects, in far western of Nepal.

Issuing a press statement on Monday, the IBoN has stated that the 52nd board meeting of the IBoN that was chaired by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba took a decision to this effect. The NHPC Limited had submitted a proposal in May to develop the project.

The board meeting has also approved the draft of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed with the NHPC Limited. The NHPC Limited is an Indian government hydropower company under India’s Ministry of Power.

The joint projects include 750MW West Seti Hydropower Project and 450MW Seti River (SR-6) project. The projects are located at elevations ranging from 550 to 920 metres and are spread across six districts of western Nepal.

It is estimated that the cost of the project would be $2.4 billion. The proposed dam site of the project is located about 82 kilometers upstream of the confluence of the Seti and Karnali rivers.

Though the West Seti project was envisioned about some six decades ago, no proper initiation was taken earlier to develop the projects.
