New Delhi, India: The weeks-long protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) appeared to move towards a resolution on Saturday after the central government agreed to fulfil the party’s key demands following the third round of negotiations.
The agreement was announced at a joint press conference attended by senior Union ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, along with CJP spokespersons Saurabh Das and Anshutosh Ranka. The development marked a significant breakthrough after prolonged demonstrations and growing pressure on the government to resolve the dispute through dialogue.
The CJP described the talks as successful and appealed to protesters across the country to end their demonstrations and return home, saying that the objectives of the movement had been achieved through negotiations.
"The government has informed us that it is ready to fulfil all of our demands. It has also accepted our second demand," CJP spokesperson Saurabh Das told reporters following the meeting.
One of the major outcomes of the negotiations, according to Das, is the government’s decision to withdraw all First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against protesters. He said the withdrawal would apply not only to cases registered in New Delhi but also to FIRs filed across the country.
"The government has assured us that all FIRs filed against protesters will be withdrawn. It has also promised that no CJP worker will face legal action in the future for participating in peaceful demonstrations," Das said.
The decision, if implemented, is expected to provide relief to numerous protesters who had faced legal action during the course of the movement.
CJP spokesperson Anshutosh Ranka said the government had also agreed to provide ₹10 million (one crore rupees) in compensation to the families of students who died by suicide during the protests.
Ranka said the decision represented an acknowledgement of the suffering faced by the affected families and fulfilled one of the movement’s key humanitarian demands.
The agreement followed three rounds of negotiations between representatives of the protest movement and senior officials from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The talks were initiated after demonstrations spread to several parts of the country, increasing pressure on authorities to find a peaceful solution.
Earlier on Saturday, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from his position. Although neither the government nor the CJP has officially linked his resignation to the protests or the negotiations, the timing of the development has attracted considerable political attention.
The central government has not yet released the complete details of the agreement or announced a specific timeline for implementing the commitments. However, the joint appearance of senior government representatives and CJP leaders indicated that both sides had reached an understanding.
