Kathmandu, Nepal: The India visit of Rabi Lamichhane, Chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has drawn widespread attention across political, diplomatic, and public spheres. Lamichhane departed for India on Monday for a five-day official visit at the invitation of Nitin Naveen, President of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The visit comes at a time when debates are intensifying in Nepal over the government’s foreign policy direction, the management of relations with neighboring countries, and the need for maintaining diplomatic balance. As such, the visit is being viewed not merely as a routine engagement but as one carrying broader political and strategic significance.

According to the RSP, Lamichhane is scheduled to hold high-level political and diplomatic meetings in New Delhi, where he will engage with senior BJP leaders on bilateral interests, cooperation, and contemporary issues. He is also expected to interact with members of the Nepali community, intellectuals, and party supporters residing in India. The itinerary includes a visit to Ayodhya as well.

Meanwhile, recent remarks by Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah regarding Nepal–India border issues have sparked controversy, triggering protests and debate from Parliament to the streets. This has further heightened public sensitivity around issues of sovereignty and diplomacy.

Against this backdrop, Lamichhane’s visit is being closely watched in diplomatic and political circles. Observers suggest that it could signal an effort to strengthen Nepal–India ties through dialogue, although its real impact will depend on tangible outcomes.

A five-member delegation led by Lamichhane is participating in the visit. The team includes RSP Joint General Secretary and Member of Parliament Bipin Kumar Acharya, Secretariat Member and MP Deepak Bohora, Nikita Poudel, and Pradeep Acharya. The RSP has stated that the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi is facilitating and coordinating the visit.

Overall, amid ongoing debates over foreign policy, domestic political tensions, and sensitivities surrounding border issues, the visit is expected to offer important signals regarding Nepal’s evolving diplomatic direction.
