Kathmandu, Nepal, October 22, 2020: The split of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) is going to be formalized through the separate central committee meeting scheduled for today (Tuesday).

Both the factions- one led by KP Sharma Oli and another led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal have called central committee meeting as part of their show of strength.

It is likely that the two central committee meetings are expected to announce disciplinary action against Dahal and Oli and to head to claim the party’s name and symbol.

Though the party was pulled back from a split for several times in the past, current embroiling intra-party rift over Primer Oli’s unilateral decision to recommend dissolving the House of Representatives has played role to formalize to split the party.

The erstwhile Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) and Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) had announced their unification in 2018 following the electoral alliance forged for the elections held in 2017. After 31 months long unification has come to end due to the decision to go for the fresh elections.

The split of now would not strictly be with former UML as senior leaders of the former UML namely Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalnath Khanal have joined up with Dahal though the party is already registered in the Election Commission in the behest of Oli. Likewise, Oli has also some Maoist leaders namely Lekhraj Bhatta.

It seems that Dahal led faction would gain majority strength in all party committees including the central committee, the highest decision making body of the party, even though senior leader duo Bam Dev Gautam and Ram Bahadur Thapa have yet to give clear sign to join in his camp.
