KATHMANDU: For many years, people visiting Kathmandu dreamed of seeing the snow-covered Himalayas from the valley. Today, that breathtaking view is often hidden behind a thick layer of smog. What was once an occasional problem has now become a daily reality for millions of people.
Air pollution is no longer just an environmental issue. It has become one of Nepal's most serious public health challenges. Doctors, researchers and international organisations warn that polluted air contributes to thousands of premature deaths every year. It also increases healthcare costs, reduces productivity and negatively affects the country's economy.
The Invisible Threat in the Air
The air we breathe contains a mixture of dust, smoke and harmful gases. Among these, the most dangerous is PM2.5, a fine particulate matter about 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Because these particles are so tiny, they can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.
Other harmful pollutants include nitrogen dioxide from vehicle exhaust, sulphur dioxide from industries and brick kilns, and ground-level ozone, which forms when sunlight reacts with pollutants already present in the atmosphere.
Why Is Kathmandu So Polluted?
Kathmandu's geography makes the problem even worse. The city lies in a valley surrounded by hills, creating a natural bowl that traps polluted air.
During winter and periods of calm weather, a layer of warm air settles above the valley while cooler air remains below. This phenomenon, known as a temperature inversion, prevents polluted air from escaping, allowing smoke and dust to accumulate for days.
Imagine lighting a fire inside a large bowl and placing a lid on top. Without fresh air or strong winds, the smoke has nowhere to escape. Kathmandu experiences a similar situation.
Major Sources of Air Pollution
Several human activities contribute to poor air quality in the Kathmandu Valley.
Vehicle emissions: Thousands of cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles release harmful gases every day. Older diesel-powered vehicles are among the largest contributors.
Road and construction dust: Dust from damaged roads, construction sites and unpaved streets becomes airborne, especially during the dry season.
Brick kilns and industries: Coal-fired brick kilns and factories release large quantities of smoke and fine particulate matter into the atmosphere.
Open burning: Burning household waste, garbage and agricultural residue releases additional toxic smoke into the air.
How Air Pollution Affects Health
Breathing polluted air can cause immediate health problems, including coughing, sore throats, eye irritation and difficulty breathing.
Long-term exposure is far more serious. It increases the risk of asthma, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. Children, older adults and people with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable.
The Economic Cost
Air pollution also places a heavy burden on Nepal's economy. Families spend more on medical treatment, workers lose productive hours due to illness, flights are occasionally delayed because of poor visibility, and tourism suffers when visitors are unable to enjoy clear views of the Himalayas.
What Can We Do?
Reducing air pollution requires action from both the government and the public.
The government needs to strengthen vehicle emission standards, improve public transportation, promote electric vehicles, control dust from construction activities and enforce environmental regulations more effectively.
Individuals can also play their part by checking the Air Quality Index (AQI) before going outdoors, wearing a properly fitted N95 or KN95 mask on heavily polluted days, avoiding open burning, using public transport whenever possible and planting more trees.
A Shared Responsibility
Kathmandu's air pollution crisis did not develop overnight, and it cannot be solved overnight. However, through stronger policies, cleaner technologies and greater public awareness, the valley can move towards cleaner and healthier air.
Clean air is not a luxury—it is a basic necessity for a healthy life. Protecting it is a shared responsibility of every citizen, community and government institution.
