Kathmandu, Nepal, October 21, 2023: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has already been in the spotlight due to questions about the constitutional validity of the appointment of its office-bearers and the perceived ineffectiveness of its operations, has also faced similar type of credibility questions by the Accountability Watch Committee (AWC).

The AWC has raised concerns regarding the government's recent initiative to amend the Bill related to the NHRC in light of the imminent downgrading threat it faces. The bill tabled in the parliament is questioned in home and abroad by the human right agencies.

The one after another concern raised by the international agencies has raised credibility questions over the national human right watchdog, NHRC. The appointment made by the erstwhile CPN UML Chairman KP Oli-led government was questioned due to the reason of appointing sans of constitutional process.

The Global Alliance of Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), an organization representing national human rights commissions, had recommended downgrading the NHRC from an "A" category commission to a "B" category raising concerns over the appointment process of the commissioners even calling the government for necessary reforms.
