Kathmandu: Chandrakant Bhandari, Madhu Acharya and Binod Chaudhary have been elected vice-presidents of the Nepali Congress at the party’s 15th General Convention. Pradeep Paudel, Uday Shumsher Rana and Dila Sangroula have also been elected general secretaries, according to the vote counts provided.

Bhandari and Acharya won the two open vice-president positions, while Chaudhary secured the inclusive position. Paudel and Rana won the two open general secretary positions, and Sangroula was elected to the women’s general secretary position.

Bhandari tops open vice-president race

Bhandari received 3,735 votes, the highest total in the open vice-president category. Acharya came second with 2,342 votes, securing the other position.

Other candidates in the category received 1,752 votes for Govinda Bhattarai, 1,673 for Surendra Raj Pandey, 1,596 for Dhanraj Gurung, 923 for Deepak Giri and 760 for Chandra Mohan Yadav.

In the inclusive vice-president category, Chaudhary defeated Jeevan Pariyar by 87 votes. Chaudhary received 1,745 votes, compared with Pariyar’s 1,658.

The other candidates in the category were Farmullah Mansur, who received 1,144 votes; Sita Gurung, who received 1,112; and Ranjit Karna, who secured 562 votes.

Paudel receives highest vote count among vice-president and general secretary candidates

In the open general secretary category, Paudel won with 4,194 votes. This was the highest vote total among the candidates listed for the vice-president and general secretary positions.

Rana secured the second open general secretary position with 2,330 votes. Sunil Kumar Sharma finished close behind with 2,257 votes, a difference of 73.

Other candidates in the open general secretary category received 1,513 votes for Gururaj Ghimire, 1,134 for Nain Singh Mahar, 1,125 for Amar Singh Pun Magar, 123 for Shankar Tiwari and 97 for Santosh Upadhyay.

In the women’s general secretary category, Sangroula (Pant) won with 3,118 votes. She defeated Mahalakshmi Upadhyay, known as ‘Dina’, who received 2,864 votes, by a margin of 254. Rita Khanal received 804 votes.

Thapa elected party president

Gagan Thapa had earlier been elected president of the Nepali Congress, defeating Shyam Krishna Khadgi, according to the report.

Bishwa Prakash Sharma was elected senior vice-president unopposed, while Pushpa Bhusal was elected unopposed to the women’s vice-president position.

Under the revised party statute described in the report, the Nepali Congress will have one senior vice-president, four vice-presidents and three general secretaries. The vice-president positions comprise two open seats, one women’s seat and one inclusive seat. The general secretary positions comprise two open seats and one women’s seat.

Previously, the party had two vice-presidents and two general secretaries. The revised provisions also increase the size of the Central Working Committee to 297 members.

Vote counting for the joint general secretary positions was still underway at the time of the original report.
