Brampton, Canada: Brampton’s mayoral race is taking shape ahead of the Oct. 26, 2026, municipal election, with incumbent Mayor Patrick Brown seeking re-election.
A number of candidates have entered the race, including Jagruti Bhatt, Gurdeep Singh Dhothar, Vidya Sagar Gautam, Prabh Gill, Wesley Jackson, Najma Khurram, Nathaniel Peart, Prabhjot Kaur Sidhu, Sandeep Somal, Paul Tarriwal and Gaurav Walia.
Brown, who has served as Brampton’s mayor since 2018, is seeking another term. The candidates will be competing for the support of voters across the city as the campaign moves toward election day.
Local issues are expected to feature prominently during the campaign. Housing, transportation, infrastructure, municipal services, development and the city’s continued population growth are among the issues that could shape the mayoral contest.
Brampton’s demographics also make its South Asian population an important part of the city’s electorate. Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census shows that South Asians were the largest racialized group in Brampton, with 340,815 people, representing 52.4 per cent of the population.
At the same time, the city is home to residents from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Candidates will therefore be seeking support across the broader electorate rather than relying on a single community.
The 2026 municipal election will determine Brampton’s mayor and members of council for the next term. With several candidates in the mayoral race, voters will have a range of choices when they go to the polls on Oct. 26.
