Kathmandu, Nepal, November 22, 2019:Contradicting the understanding reached among the political parties, Co-chair of the ruling head Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that there would be new office bearers in the Transitional Justice (TJ) mechanism- Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons ( CIEDP).
As conflict victims have complained that old office bearers of the two transitional justice mechanisms had failed to do the assigned jobs and demanded new office bearers, I have made the decision to stand in favor of new office bearers, Dahal said while addressing a program organized by the Conflict Victims Common Platform here in Kathmandu on Friday.
Dahal has made the statement contradicting to the understanding reached between the leaders of the major political parties including the main opposition Nepali Congress. During the recent meeting among the top leaders, it was concluded that the transitional justice mechanisms will be fulfilled by appointing the old office bearers.
Though the understanding was made believing that past experiences of the old office bearers would help to conclude the peace process into a logical conclusion on time, it is likely that the statement of Dahal would derail the prospect of early formation of transitional justice mechanism.
