Kathmandu, Nepal: Discussion over the constitution amendment bill is started nearly three months after its registration in the parliament on Thursday.
Though the constitution amendment bill was registered on November 29, 2016 in a bid to address concerns of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), the opposition parties including the main opposition CPN-UML had been obstructing the parliament meeting protesting to the bill.
However, the UML has remained silence about the bill though it has not agreed yet to support the bill. It is said that the UML has remained silent over the bill with the idea that it would support to passage the bill if the agitating UDMF agree to hold the local level elections.
Speaking at the Parliament meeting on Thursday, UML Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Subas Chandra Nembang said that his party has decided to let the House to discuss over the bill, but not agreed to allow endorsing the constitution amendment bill.
As the constitution amendment bill is not worthy for endorsement, we are standing against endorsing it, Nembang said expressing his confidence that the bill will be rejected by majority votes in the House.
However, the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, one of the ally of the opposition parties, has opposed the bill.
Three lawmakers of the party- Prem Suwal, Anuradha Thapa Magar and Dilli Prasad Kafle–stood up from their seats as soon as the discussion began chanting slogans against of the bill claiming the proposal was against national interests.
Despite the slogans from the Lawmakers of the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, the House meeting was continued. Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar had not paid any heed to the protests and slogans of the party.
