Guwahati: The much-awaited final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam will miss its deadline of June 30 with the NRC State Coordinator has moved the Supreme Court to seek a deadline extension.
The apex court will hear the matter on July 2 next.
NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela on Thursday said that, the final draft of NRC will not publish on June 30 due to current flood situation in the state and the NRC authorities had moved the court to seek a deadline extension to publish the final draft.
“Now the apex court will decide the matter,” Prateek Hajela said.
Meanwhile, a top source said that, the NRC authorities had sought a minimum 7 days more time from the Supreme Court to publish the final draft of NRC.
The authorities had requestd the apex court to extend the publication date due to flood situation in the state as the verification process have reportedly been affected in many NRC Seva Kendras.
After publishing the first draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Supreme Court has directed the Registrar General of India (RGI), the State Coordinator of NRC to publish the final draft of NRC by June 30.
Earlier, a Supreme Court bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman had directed the Registrar General of India (RGI) and the State Coordinator of NRC to publish the final draft on June 30.
Recently, the RGI Shri Shailesh had visited Assam and holding a series of meeting with the State Coordinator of NRC Prateek Hajela and top officials of Assam government, Assam police and discussed about the publication of final draft of NRC.
The RGI also visited several districts and holding meetings with the district administration.
The first draft of NRC was published on December 31 midnight last by including names of 1.90 crore people out of the total 3.29 crore applicants of Assam recognising them as legal citizens of India.
