Kathmandu, Nepal: The groundbreaking ceremony for the “Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road Affected by Floods” was held on Sunday, marking the official commencement of reconstruction works.

The ceremony was attended by Gopal Prasad Sigdel, Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Maeda Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal. The rehabilitation project will be undertaken by Shimizu Corporation, one of Japan’s leading construction companies.

The 160-kilometre Sindhuli Road is a vital artery linking the mid- and eastern Terai regions with the capital, Kathmandu. Constructed with Japanese grant assistance amounting to 25.8 billion yen between 1995 and 2015, the road has significantly contributed to Nepal’s economic growth by facilitating trade and transportation.

However, the road sustained severe damage due to floods triggered by continuous heavy rainfall in September 2024. More than 10 kilometres of the roadway were washed away, disrupting local livelihoods and economic activities, as well as affecting the broader national economy.
