KATHMANDU: Police have arrested five persons for throwing waste into the Bagmati River in Til Ganga of Kathmandu on Saturday.
The arrestees were workers of Annapurna Sweets Shop in Gaushala, Arun Glass House, Chicken House and a furniture shop in Tilganga and Shiva Shankar Hotel in Jaya Bageshwori.
They were arrested red-handed while disposing garbage in the River, said Sub-Inspector Badriman Nagarkoti.
The arrestees have been fined Rs 5,000 each for their untoward action, according to police.
Under the Solid Waste Management Act-2011, those found guilty of disposing garbage in prohibited zones face a six-month jail term or a penalty of Rs 5,000 to Rs 150,000 or both, according to the nature of offense.
Meanwhile, around 10 tonnes of solid waste were extracted from various rivers in the Kathmandu valley including Bagmati River and its tributaries at various places in the Valley today as a part of the Bagmati Clean-Up Campaign that entered 191st week today.RSS
