Biratnagar, Nepal, August 18, 2023: Nepali Congress, Koshi Province Parliamentary Party leader Uddhav Thapa has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Koshi Province again just 6 days after he was relieved of his post. Following the Supreme Court order, Thapa was relieved of his post within 22 days of being appointed as the Chief Minister for the first time.

Thapa, who was appointed as the Chief Minister last time, submitted the signature of Speaker Baburam Gautam to claim the post of Chief Minister. The Supreme Court had annulled his appointment stating that using signature of Speaker was illegal.

Responding to the writ petition filed by CPN UML’s Kosi Province parliamentary party leader Hikmat Kumar Karki, the Supreme Court had dismissed Thapa's appointment as Chief Minister terming the appoint as illegal.

As Speaker Gautam resigned from the post to be limited on the position as provincial assembly member, Thapa presented his claim to the Chief Ministership with the support of 47 MPs including Gautam. 
Newly appointed Chief Minister Thapa has got the support of 47 MPs including 29 MPs from Congress, 13 MPs from Maoist Center, 4 MPs from CPN United Socialist Party and 1 MP from Jaspa. The majority number in the province is 47 as there are 93 MPs in the Kosi province Assembly.

According to Article 168 of the Constitution, Chief Minister Khapung has given time till 5 o'clock on Tuesday to submit the government's claim with the support of two or more parties.
