Guwahati, July 4 : A local court in Assam on Thursday convicted six persons in connection with the Dhemaji bomb blast incident triggered by the militants of banned outfit group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on August 15, 2004.

The bomb blast took place at Dhemaji College play ground in Dhemaji district on the occasion of Independence Day in 2004, in which at least 13 persons including 10 school children and three women were killed and more than 40 persons injured in the explosion.

After a long wait of 15 years, the Dhemaji District and Session Judge Court on Thursday pronounced its judgement of the blast incident case and charges charges framed under sections- 120/120B/121A/122/302/326 of the Indian Penal Code and convicted six out of total 15 accused persons

The court has convicted Leela Khan, Muhi Handique, Jatin Duwori alias Rongmon, Dipanjali Gohain and awarded them life term with fine of Rs 10,000 each.

Apart from the four persons, the court has convicted two other persons Prasanta Bhuyan and Homen Gogoi and awarded four years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs 5,000 each.

The court has acquitted eight persons and they are – Mohan Chutia, Chandra Nath Gogoi, Gobin Kalita, Joy Chandra Chutia, Apsara Borah, Jaya Chutia, Jiten Chutia and Meena Baruah.

The Dhemaji district police had submitted charge sheet and accusing 15 persons in the case.

One accused person Rashid Bharali was reportedly absconding.

In the blast 13 people including 10 school children were killed and the victims were identified as Sidharta Taid, Pradipta Gogoi, Rupa Saikia, Manjeet Gogoi, Juganta Padun, Bijit Sonowal, Nomita Gogoi, Chitrawati Doley, Dhanada Gogoi, Dinesh Padun, Manashi Borgohain, Aruna Saikia and Girin Saikia and most of the victims aged between 12-14 years.
