Guwahati, Sep 3 : Assam police on Monday had arrested five persons in connection with a gang rape incident as a married woman was gang raped in a moving car and then thrown her on the National Highway in Assam’s Nagaon district on August 28 night.

According to the reports, following a tip-off, the Nagaon district police had launched operation in different locations of the central Assam district and arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the gang rape incident.

The arrested persons were identified as Hafiz Bhuyan, Raqibul Islam, Mainul Hussain, Ramjan Ali and Safikul Islam and they have confessed the crime during police interrogation.

On August 28 night, a married woman, worked in a local dhaba was gang raped in a moving car near Amoni area under Jakhalabandha police station in Nagaon district.

The woman was moving from Lanka towards Golaghat with her boyfriend on a bike and they were intercepted by five men travelling on Maruti Swift Dzire car near Nagaon and forced her into the vehicle.

The woman was raped by the men in the moving car and later the victim was dumped on the National Highway 37 near Amoni area.

The incident came to light after a driver of an oil tanker had rescued the victim and reported the incident at Jakhalabandha police station.

The victim was immediately rushed to Nagaon civil hospital.

Following the incident, Nagaon district police had registered a case and started investigation and finally caught the culprits.

Meanwhile, police had also seized the vehicle.

Nagaon district Superintendent of Police (SP) Shankar Barata Raimedhi said that, we will take the accused persons in our own custody to collect more informations.

“We have just arrested the persons and few more works are still pending. We have taken the case very seriously,” the Assam cop said.
