Guwahati : The Assam police is known for its unique activities and continuing its effort for the people, the Assam police on Thursday has launched a programme related to the Children named "Shishu-Mitra".

Assam Police Shishu-Mitra programme has been envisioned to promote Child Friendly Policing in Assam and therefore, the Assam police in association with UNICEF and UTSAH – a Child Rights organization have conceptualized the programme.

It is the first Child Friendly Policing initiative in the country taken by the Assam police.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday had launched the programme at a function held in Guwahati.

Under the programme, Chilf Friendly Police kit which contains Police Jackets and Do's and Don'ts manual, Training and Bridging Gap, Child Friendly Police Corner, Media Outreach on Ending Violence against Children in Assam were unveiled.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Sonowal terming the children as the future of the country said that there should be synergistic approach from all stake holders for the protection of rights of the children. This should be done to give a conducive environment for the children to grow up.

Hailing Assam Police for its success stories achieved in the last three years, Sonowal said that Assam Police Sishu-Mitra Programme is a testimony to one of the successes of Assam Police.

Stating that the 21st century is full of challenges, Sonowal asked the Assam Police personnel to tread its future path considering all challenges and negotiate with them with all professionalism for creating a level playing ground for all including the children.

He also observed that if a favourable atmosphere is created, children will get every opportunity to grow up and become ideal citizens.

He urged upon the Assam Police personnel who will be dealing with children to be very humane and use their child friendly police kit to bring about positive changes in their approach towards children.

Sonowal also said that Child Friendly Kit which has got a jacket as an essential component is just an outer costume, as he appealed to the police to be humble and kind and understand the psyche of the children.

Assam Chief Minister Sonowal said that, the Assam police will give all efforts to success the programme with the help of the people of the state.

"The programme has been taken by aiming to increase the children trust upon the Assam police. Assam police will do their works to provide adequate security to the children," Sonowal said.

Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that towards child protection, the country has very child friendly policy like POSCO Act. She also said that under Assam Police Sishu-Mitra Programme, proactive steps would be taken for the welfare of children.

On the other hand, senior police officer and Guwahati city police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said that – today we have launched an unique jacket in collaboration with UTSAH and UNICEF.

"It is basically aiming to make Child Friendly Policing. A police man can wear this jacket on his police dress during the investigation and he will look like as a civilian. Basically, the children go to scare seeing police uniform," Deepak Kumar said.

Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia, Additional Chief Secretary Home and Political Kumar Sanjay Krishna, Additional Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, representatives from UNICEF Dr. Yasmine Ali Haque, Dr. Tushar Rane, MLA Bima Bora, senior police officers and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
