Guwahati, July 16 : Assam Congress on Monday alleged that, the BJP is using the ongoing updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for religious polarisation among the people of the state.

Addressing a press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora said that, the saffron party is using the NRC for their political gains.

“We have very seriously observed and reviewed the entire NRC process that, the BJP is going to misuse the NRC in their political interest. We have already received lots of inputs. The BJP is using the NRC for polarisation among the people of the state,” Ripun Bora said.

Bora further alleged that, the NRC officials of the state have been violating the guidelines set by the Registrar General of India (RGI).

“They didn’t follow the direction of the Supreme Court. The BJP-led government pressurising the NRC state coordinator and other NRC officials to exclude the names of a particular religious community people from the final draft of NRC to be published on July 30. They ordered the NRC officials to cut the names of religious minority people in some selected assembly constituencies in the state as aiming to do polarisation politics in upcoming elections,” Ripun Bora said.

“We will not allow this type of polarisation politics. All genuine Indian citizens names should not be excluded from the NRC at any cost,” Bora said.

The APCC president said that, Congress will help all Indian citizens whose names will exclude from the final draft of NRC and if needed, they will provide legal service also.

Senior Congress MLA and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia said that, BJP is targeting the people of a particular religious community and harassed them in many occasions.

Reacting over tollgate at Raha in central Assam’s Nagaon district, Ripun Bora said that, the tollgate is not being operated as per the NHAI directives.

“We are not against tollgate, but the Raha tollgate is collecting too much high taxes from the people. The tollgate should be closed till all construction works being completed,” Bora said.

On the other hand, the Congress leader said that, coal syndicate is still going on in the state and the recent Barak Valley coal scam has proved it.
